The problem

Properties built before roughly 1875 rarely have a damp-proof course at all. Many later ones have a slate or bitumen DPC that has cracked, been drilled through, or been bypassed entirely by a raised patio, a rendered plinth or a flower bed piled against the wall.

We install chemical damp-proof courses to BS 6576 and, just as often, restore the performance of an existing one by removing whatever is bridging it. The second option is cheaper and we will always tell you when it is the right answer.

How we handle it

From first reading to registered guarantee

The same five stages on every job, whether it is one wall or a whole property.

  1. 01

    Locate the existing DPC

We establish whether a course exists, at what height, and whether it has simply been bridged.

  2. 02

    Remove bridging

Lowering ground levels, cutting back render, forming a clear margin and clearing cavity debris.

  3. 03

    Drill and inject

Consistent hole spacing at mortar-bed height, injected with a high-concentration silane cream.

  4. 04

    Replaster where required

Salt-contaminated plaster removed and rebuilt with a retardant system.

  5. 05

    Record and guarantee

Injection heights, product batch and coverage recorded, works guaranteed for 25 years.

Questions

Damp-Proof Course Installation — answered

Usually yes, and it avoids disturbing internal finishes. Where the external face is inaccessible or the wall is solid stone, we work from inside instead.

Injection is unreliable in random rubble. We normally specify a cavity drain membrane or a tanking system on those walls, which we would explain at survey stage.

A correctly installed silane cream course has no realistic wear-out mechanism in the wall. Ours carry a 25-year guarantee.
